ELM Runs on Windows 7
Yes, the new operating system has finally been released and response so far has been very positive. The IT world has been waiting for the next generation of operating system to replace XP after Vista never really took flight. It appears it is finally here.

In our September newsletter poll we asked "Will your company eventually migrate to Windows 7?" and a total 69% of responses indicated that yes they would be at some point.

We have been running Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate in our lab here at TNT Software since the week it was released (and a few employees on their desktops as well!) and we are happy to announce that ELM products successfully run on and monitor Windows 7.

Stay tuned for complete details and updates on ELM with the new Windows 7 operating system in coming issues of the Newsletter!

Last Month's Administrator Rights Curiosity Poll Results

Convenience vs. Policy - Last month we asked, Do you normally logon and work with administrator permissions? And here's what our readers had to say:

Security policy and procedures aside, it appears that it boils down to one golden rule for most - "Time is Money."

November Curiosity Poll - ELM and SQL

Last month Microsoft made available the SQL 2008 R2 CTP, and the last SQL 2000 Service Pack was in 2005. With this steady move away from SQL 2000, we are curious if you are moving too.

Are you limited to running ELM with a SQL 2000 database?

Microsoft also just announced that it will soon deliver a third Community Technical Preview (CTP) pre-release of the upcoming SQL Server 2008 R2 database server. The final version is expected sometime in early-to-mid 2010.

The "ELM 411" - Improved Database Pruning

We all like to be more efficient - and like our systems to run at peak efficiency as well. As auditing and data volumes have increased, your ELM database has probably experienced a corresponding boost in size. This in-turn creates more work for the archiving and pruning tasks ELM performs.

To address this, the current release of ELM 5.5.141 has made improvements to the pruning technique it uses. Instead of one copy and delete operation, ELM now uses an Incremental Pruning approach.

ELM Pre-Build 141
ELM Build 141

Single Copy

Incremental Copy

If archiving, ELM will bulk copy 5000 rows to the Archive database, and then delete 5000 rows from the Primary database. Then it will process the next 5000 rows, repeating until all older data is removed from the Primary database.

ELM Pre-Build 141
ELM Build 141

Single Delete

Incremental Delete

If just pruning, ELM will delete increments of 5000 rows at a time. This results in much shorter blocking, and smoother operation of your ELM Server and event collection.

If you haven't already, we highly encourage you to update to the latest release of ELM to take advantage of the new efficiencies in data management. Click Here to Download Now!
